Following the success of its last-years selfie-centric android smartphone series, the Redmi Y1, the Chinese mobile vendor Xiaomi has launched the upgraded version of this mobile in India today, the Redmi Y2.
This time Xiaomi is using its AI-power on the software side to boost up the already good 16-megapixel selfie camera on Redmi Y2. In addition to that, it gets all the bells and whistles you expect from Xiaomi. This includes Snapdragon SoC, dedicated SD card slot, up to 4GB of RAM, bigger screen with HD display and 4G VoLTE support.
Talking first about the pricing, Redmi Y2 will retail at a price tag starting Rs 9,999 which is for the 3GB RAM and 32GB storage variant. While the 4GB RAM and 64GB storage variant will retail for Rs 12,999. Both these variant will be up for sale starting on 12th June 2018 exclusively on Amazon India, Mi.com and Mi Home offline stores.
There is few launch day offers, like Rs 500 instant discount when purchasing the device via ICICI Bank debit and credit card. Also if you choose Airtel 4G then you could get Rs 1800 instant cashback and up to 240GB of free data with the device.
Design and Performance
Redmi Y2 boasts a premium look and feel, thanks to the brushed metallic finish and rounded back. The mobile flaunts a 5.99-inch HD+ full-screen (1440 by 720) display with an 18:9 aspect ratio. Under the hood, the mobile is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor paired with either 3GB RAM and 32GB of storage, or 4GB RAM and 64GB of storage.
There is also a dedicated card slot in Redmi Y2 in addition to the two nano-SIM card slot. Thus you can expand the storage up to 256GB using microSD card. The phone runs on Android Oreo-based MIUI 9.5 OS out of the box.
It’s all about selfies
Just like the previous year Redmi Y1, the successor Redmi Y2 boasts a 16-megapixel selfie front-facing camera. It packs large f/2.0 aperture, 79.8-degree wide-angle lens, Auto HDR mode and 4500k soft-toned selfie light support. However, the highlight here is the AI-powered features the selfie camera includes. The AI Beautify 4.0 mode can focus on ten different facial features. The AI can even intelligently preserve the “Bindi”, “Nose-pin” and facial hair that’s specially built for selfie-loving Indian Girls. Additionally, there is AI Portrait mode based on Xiaomi’s own powerful deep learning algorithm and even comes with an AI face unlock feature.
Coming to the back, Redmi Y2 features a dual camera setup same as that of Redmi Note 5 Pro. It’s a combination of 12-megapixel sensor and a 5-megapixel sensor. It has a high-end 12.5-micrometer primary sensor for higher quality photos while allowing more light. Combined with that the secondary camera which can offer authentic bokeh effect. These cameras also backed by AI-powered features.
Connectivity
For connectivity, Redmi Y2 supports 4G LTE with VoLTE for making HD voice and video calls. Other connectivity options include 3G and 2G networks, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and IR blaster. You also get the option to connect 3.5mm headphone jack. For extra security, the Redmi Y2 carries a fingerprint sensor placed at the back of the device. Finally fuelling the whole device is a 3,080mAh battery, which offers all-day battery. On a full charge, you could get up to 25 hours of call time or 7 hours of gaming or even 31 days of standby time.
