Currently, it’s pretty hard to guess which telecom operators connection would have the best reception in your area. You could ask about it with your friends who have the particular mobile connection or try it yourself via MNP porting to that network. Well, now the Indian telecom watchdog the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has officially launched a web portal to check mobile network coverage of Indian telecom operators across India.
The mobile network coverage portal [coveragemap.trai.gov.in] offers a comprehensive visualization of network coverage of all telecom operators in their respective telecom circles. The web portal is currently in its beta phase and at the moment only covers Delhi and MPCG (Madhya Pradesh & Chhattisgarh) telecom circles.
Presently, all major telecom operators offer their own network coverage map on their website or app. Like the Open Network initiative from Airtel, Smart Coverage service from Reliance Jio and Vodafone India’s Telecom Network Coverage Map. However, these network coverage maps have different scale and signal level based on the individual telcos calculation. This made it difficult for normal users to have any meaningful interpretation or comparison between these telecom operators and their coverage in an area.
To solve this issue, TRAI has come up with its own mobile network coverage portal. The service has been made public in collaboration with CDoT (Centre for Development of Telematics). The portal uses coverage data provided by different telecom operators.
So what you get from TRAI’s mobile network coverage portal? In a nutshell, using this portal you could check the network coverage of various telecom operators in your area. You could able to choose various options like exact location up to 50 mtr close, the technology used like 2G, 3G and 4G-VoLTE, Indoor and Outdoor coverage, individual telecom operators in an area, and voice and data coverage. However, the best part here is that you could compare network coverage or signal strength of two or more telecom operators in your area.
TRAI Mobile Network Coverage Portal
- Visualization of network coverage of all Telecom operators for their respective telecom circles.
- Users can fine-tune the details like:
- Individual Telecom operators in an area.
- Location with up to 50 meters close.
- Indoor and Outdoor coverage and signal strength.
- Sort by technology (2G/3G/4GVoLTE) used by the telco.
- Voice and data coverage by particular telco at your location.
- Compare network coverage and signal strength of two or more telecom operators in an area.
- Updated on regular basis using coverage data provided by telecom operators.
As we said earlier, the TRAI’s mobile network coverage portal is been launched as a beta service. Only coverage data of Delhi and MPCG telecom circles are available at the moment. You could provide feedback and suggestion by clicking “Feedback” option available on the coverage map portal.
Recently, TRAI launched Tariff portal offering customers a single location to find and compare tariff plans of telecom operators in the country. You could easily find all live tariff plans offered by a telecom operator in your telecom circle. The portal covers Wireline fixed landline, Wired Broadband, Prepaid mobile and Postpaid Mobile tariff plans of telcos in the country.
