S Tel, one of the telecom operators in India whose all telecom licenses has been canceled by the Supreme Court verdict on the 2G license case, has decided to close down its network operation in India. S Tel Pvt Ltd, part of the $ 3 billion Siva group promoted C Sivasankara, have telecom licences in Assam, North-East, Bihar, Orissa, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, with an estimated subscriber base of around 36 lakh.
S Tel has asked its subscribers to opt out of its network using Mobile number portability (MNP). To help their customers they have implemented a web-based UPC code generation facility whereby the subscriber can log on to S Tel’s website and generate UPC codes online from February 21 onwards. When this code is made available to the other telecom operators the subscriber chooses to move to, they will be able to port out of S Tel network.
“Necessary communication has already been issued to the MNP Service Providers to ensure that port outs are seamlessly carried out for the benefit of subscribers who choose the MNP option,” company said in a statement.
S Tel has already issued notification to all its subscribers through SMS campaign and notification posted on its website. Through the online UPC code generator, they have made it easy for its subscribers to opt out of its network to other telecom providers. Current subscribers can choose other telecom operators they are going to opt in making the process easy.
“We don’t want our customers to suffer without coverage and so we are helping them to transfer to another provider, It is too premature to say we are shutting shop before seeing what Trai is offering” said P. Swaminathan, president of Siva Ventures Ltd.
Stel taking part in the next auction, will be decided by S Tel’s board after evaluating the final recommendations by TRAI with regard to the auction. So the chance of getting back the 2G license seems to be a distinct possibility. If you are a S Tel customer then its time to opt-out from the network, without losing your current number and choose other telecom operator.
