Once touted to offering India’s fastest 4G internet speed is now showing a drastic drop in speed.
I would say, before the commercial launch of Reliance Jio in 5th September 2016, the speed was constantly good and high. But after the launch and when people flowed into the network attracted by the ‘Jio Preview offer’ and then the ‘Jio Welcome Offer’, the 4G speed started dropping drastically. There seems to be a major congestion in Jio 4G network which still needs more optimisation to be done.
According to a report from Ookla (the global speed testing service), the download speed on Reliance Jio 4G has decreased 23 percent month-over-month. That’s the speed test data calculated from January 2016 to September 2016, The Jio 4G mean download speed has come down from 11.31 Mbps to 8.77 Mbps.
“For now it’s safe to say that 135 Mbps is an aspiration rather than a reality for the majority of Jio’s customers as even the top 10% of tests averaged out at 17.77 Mbps in September.” reports Ookla.
Ookla also cited a report of Rtn-Asia, which reported that Reliance Jio network is “stretched to their breaking point”. In addition, Jio 4G users are facing bandwidth issues when accessing content from outside of India.
Do note that Reliance Jio is still in a nascent state with a few million subscribers, compared to the leading operators like Airtel, Vodafone India and Idea. Still, if you are getting a consistent download speed of 5 Mbps to 10 Mbps on Jio 4G, then you are one of India’s fastest mobile network.
