According to India’s telecom watchdog Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) the point of interconnection (PoI) between the new entrant in Indian telecom market Reliance Jio and Vodafone India, Idea Cellular are now under the permissible limit. Simplifying that your voice calls from Reliance Jio to Vodafone India or Idea Cellular now connects on the first try itself. Both telecom operators have provided enough PoI to Reliance Jio in all telecom circles.

But Reliance Jio users still face some slight issues connecting with subscribers under India’s top telecom operator Airtel. The congestion level is beyond the permissible limit in eight circles.

Point of Interconnection between Reliance Jio, Vodafone and Idea Improves, with Airtel still lags

I am told that PoI congestion vis-a-vis Vodafone and Idea is in a very good shape. Airtel also has reduced considerably but in some circles, it is beyond the permissible limit of 0.5 percent” said R S Sharma TRAI Chairman to PTI. “We will continue to work with the concerned operators to improve the situation. The TRAI Secretary has had a number of meetings with the concerned operators and reviewed the situation and we continue to look at it” he added.

Citing data available with the TRAI as on January 22, 2017, Vodafone and Idea Cellular are providing enough PoI to JIo. These two operators are now measuring up to the stipulated benchmarks in all telecom circles. Whereas there is a definite improvement in PoI with Airtel, but there is still congestion in eight telecom circles.

If you remember, back when Jio launched its 4G LTE services, over 12 crore calls out of 15 crore call attempts by its subscribers failed. During peak hours call drops get worse with more than 81 percent calls getting dropped. Call failure on Vodafone India network seems to be the highest clocking at 84.1 percent, followed by Airtel and Idea Cellular.

According to Sharma, TRAI has got assurance from operators for the provision of an adequate and appropriate number of PoIs, and reduction of congestion levels. So we can hope in the near future all calls from or to Reliance Jio will get connected from other telecom operators.
