Indian telecom sector is going through a staggering growth, as Telecom Regulatory Authority of India‘s (TRAI) telecom subscription data as on 31st July,2013 reveal that there has been only a marginal increase in Indian telephone subscribers. According to report the number of telephone subscribers in India rise from 903.09 million at the end of June, 2013 to 904.46 million at the end of July 2013, thereby showing a monthly growth rate of 0.15%. That’s only a rise of 1.37 million telephone subscribers during the period.
Looking into the Wireless segment (GSM, CDMA and FWP) telecom operators added 1.58 million subscribers, increasing the subscriber base from 873.36 million in June 2013 to 874.88 million at the end of July 2013. Private operators hold the majority of the telecom market share with 88.30%, where as Govt owned BSNL and MTNL hold only 11.70% market share.
Vodafone lose around 610,694 mobile subscribers during this period, followed by Tata losing 562,157 subscribers and the state owned telecom operator MTNL losing 245,096 subscribers. On the gaining side Aircel added maximum number of mobile subscribers during this period by around 755,523, followed by Reliance Communication by 515,152 subscribers and Bharti Airtel adding 476,593 subscribers.
Bharti Airtel retained its top position with 21.88% market share followed by Vodafone India in second spot with 17.65% share and Reliance Communication (RCOM) in third spot with 14.43% share closely followed by Idea cellular’s with 14.32% market share.
Mobile Number Portability requests increased from 95.59 million subscribers at the end of June 2013 to 97.82 million at the end of July 2013. In the month of July 2013 alone 2.23 million requests have been made for MNP.
Looking into the Broadband subscriber base, there has been an increase from 15.19 million at the end of June 2013 to 15.24 million at the end of July 2013, there by showing a monthly growth of 0.33%. Yearly growth in broadband subscribers is 3.76% during the last one year ((July 2012 to July 2013). BSNL tops in broadband subscribers with 9.97 million, followed by Bharti Airtel with 1.43 million subscribers and MTNL with 1.10 million subscribers.
