It’s devastating, the massive floods in Uttarakhand has caused many districts in the state becoming highly inaccessible and cut from any form of communication. Indian Army and other organizations are helping effected people in evacuating them to safe zone, but still there are many who gone missing. As a helping hand Google Crisis Response team has started the Person Finder tool that helps in finding and collecting information on missing people during the floods.
All data entered into Google Person Finder is available to the public, searchable and accessible by anyone. Individuals and organizations can help in the initiative by posting status and details of missing people in the disaster. Individuals can also search for the status of relatives or friends affected by a disaster. It’s not compiling official records of missing persons, but helping individuals, agencies and non-governmental agencies contribute to the database and receive updates.
“We hope Person Finder helps people get the latest information about their near and dear ones in these flood affected areas.” Jayanth Mysore, Senior Product Manage, Google.
As it’s open and crowd sourced, Google does not review or verify the accuracy of data entered. At the time of writing this post there are around 2500 records being tacked, indicating the tool being widely used by people. Please contribute and use the tool with full responsibility.
