After continues two months of growth, Indian telephone subscriber base has fallen again by around 1 million subscribers. According to the latest Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAI) telecom subscription report April 2013, telephone subscribers in India decreased to 897.02 million in April 2013 from 898.02 million in March 2013. India’s mobile subscriber base which includes GSM, CDMA and FWP also reported loss by a little of 0.78 million. The number of mobile subscribers fell to 867.02 million in April 2013 to 867.80 million in March 2013.

This time the state-owned telecom operator BSNL loses around 22,360,41 mobile subscribers, followed by Sistema that operates MTS India by 18,966,72 subscribers and Tata Docomo losing 7,842,99 subscribers. On the other hand Vodafone India added maximum number of mobile subscribers during this period by around 14,228,69 followed by Idea cellular by 12,840,89 subscribers and Reliance by 7,2508,8 subscribers. One of the fact to be noted that out of the total 867.02 million mobile subscribers only around 724.52 million subscribers were active on the date of Peak VLR for the month of April 2013. This means more than 150 million mobile connections are inactive and chances of they may get removed by telecom operators to free up the space.

Bharti Airtel retained its top position with 21.78% market share followed by Vodafone India in second spot with 17.74% share and Reliance Communication (RCOM) in third spot with 14.27% share closely followed by Idea cellular with 14.17%. There seems to be a tough competition going on for the third spot between Idea cellular and Reliance communication.

As from the beginning of launch Mobile Number Portability (MNP) requests is rising, with a total of 91.73 million subscribers opting for MNP at the end of April 2013 to move to another telecom operator. Karnataka (10.89 million) subscribers topped in MNP request followed by Rajasthan (8.8 million) and Andhra Pradesh (8.2 million).

Total Broadband subscribers in India increased from 15.05 million in March 2013 to 15.09 million in April 2013 there by showing a monthly growth rate of 0.29%. There are 162 Internet Service Providers (ISPs) which are providing broadband services in the country. BSNL tops in broadband subscribers with 9.94 million, followed by Bharti Airtel with 1.40 million subscribers and MTNL with 1.09 million subscribers.
