Is your voice calling from Jio to other Indian telecom operators mainly Airtel, Idea and Vodafone falling out? Well, this situation may get solved soon.
Indian telecom operator Idea Cellular has said to provide additional points of interconnect (POIs) to Reliance Jio. This will in-turn benefit the Jio customers who are currently on the Jio welcome offer and getting unlimited free voice calling to anywhere and any network in India.
Idea Celluar, the first telecom operator to respond to Reliance Jio request for more POIs. Idea plans to release 196 additional POIs which will cater to Jio’s subscribers.
In August 2016, there was a total of 2.97 million Jio subscribers who terminated calls on Idea network. But Idea claims to be providing POIs to cater 4.65 million subscribers indicating a buffer of 57% in calling capacity. With the new allocation of POIs, the capacity will increase over 6.5 million subscribers.
“In the past been providing and augmenting Points of Interconnect (POIs) very liberally and we will continue to support all new operators for all their reasonable, fair and legitimate requirements of POIs,operators,” said Idea cellular in a statement.
But, Idea claims that its incurring increasing costs due to an asymmetry of traffic of around 14.5 times between them and Reliance Jio. The real cost of termination is significantly higher than the current interconnect settlement charge of 14 paise per minute as prescribed in the current interconnection usage charge (IUC)regime.
Unless controlled, this induced traffic asymmetry is expected to increase operator’s loss in the coming months. Idea Cellular has also approached the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to look into this issue.
