Mobile number portability (MNP) has been greatly received by the Indian mobile subscribers, suggest TRAI’s latest Telecom Subscription Data report as on 31st May 2012. Mobile Number Portability requests increased from 45.89 million subscribers at the end of April 2012 to 50.16 million at the end of May 2012. In the month of May 2012 alone, 4.27 million requests have been made for MNP. MNP service allow the subscribers a chance to opt out from their existing service provider onto a new service provider without changing their mobile number.
This time also mobile subscribers from Karnataka tops the list with 5.81 million MNP request. An increase of 0.7million MNP request from the previous TRAI report on April 2012.
Other statistics from the Telecom Subscription Data as on 31st May 2012, the number of telephone subscribers in India increased to 960.90 Million at the end of May, 2012 from 952.91 Million at the end of April 2012, thereby registering a growth rate of 0.84%. The share of Urban subscribers has declined to 64.65% from 64.95% whereas share of Rural Subscribers has increased to 35.35%in the month of May 2012.
Counting on the Wireless segment which includes GSM, CDMA and FWP, the total wireless subscriber base in India increased from 921.02 Million in April 2012 to 929.37 Million at the end of May 2012, registering a growth of 0.91%. The share of Urban wireless subscribers has decreased from 64.54 % to 64.24% where as share of Rural wireless subscribers has increased from 35.46% to 35.76%. The overall wireless Tele density in India reaches 76.68.
Bharti Airtel still remains the top telecom operator in India with 19.94% market share, an increase of .04 million telecom subscribers from the previous month. Reliance Communication taking the second spot with 16.658% share, a decrease in the subscriber base of 0.9million and Vodafone in the third place with 16.41% share. Also in the net addition of new users Bharti Airtel topped with 24.08% share and Govt owned MTNL and BSNL losing total around –3.04%.Hope BSNL deal with ZTE would help to regain the subscriber base.
On the Broadband segment, the total Broadband subscriber base has increased from 13.95 million at the end of April 2012 to 14.31 million at the end of May 2012, there by showing a monthly growth of 2.60%. Yearly growth in broadband subscribers is 18.06% during the last one year (June 2011 to May 2012).
Govt owned BSNL ISP topped the subscriber base with 63.7% share, a decrease of 0.9million subscribers but still added 9.12 millionbroadband subscribers within ne month, followed by Bharti Airtel ISP (9.6%) and MTNL ISP (7.4%).
