Experiencing super slow downloading speed on your 4G LTE connection, possibly you’re online at the wrong time. According to OpenSignal, a wireless coverage mapping company, the best time to download a movie or file on your 4G LTE connection in India, would be midnight. Actually, you would get 4.5 times faster download speed at night.

OpenSignal during their study of 4G download speed across 20 of India’s largest cities, observed that Indian users experience varying 4G speeds depending on the city they live in and across the hours of the day. During the day time, when the mobile network usage is at the peak, the average LTE download speed drops 2.8 Mbps compared to the daily average. Actually, users in Allahabad city experienced the slowest 4G download speed at 2 Mbps during the day time.

However, during the midnight and early morning, when the mobile network is less congested, 4G LTE download speeds jump on average by 10.3 Mbps. Users in Indore are getting an average 4G download speed of 21.6 Mbps. In all of the 20 Indian cities, where the study has been conducted the 4G download speed throttled upwards 14 Mbps.

4G LTE download speeds in India are 4.5 time faster at night

If you’re looking for that perfect time to start the download, then OpenSignal data shows at 4 AM, users in all of the 20 Indian cities experienced an average 4G download speeds of 16.8 Mbps. Similarly, the worst time to download would be at late evening at 10 PM. Presumably, it would be the time when most you are relaxing at home and accessing entertainment services such as mobile video.

Other interesting stats from the OpenSignal study :
  • During congested times, users across all cities had a much slower 4G download speed ranging from 2.5 Mbps to 5.6 Mbps.
  • During the less-congested hours, the 4G download speeds increased by approximately 9.8 Mbps to range from 9.9 Mbps to 19.7 Mbps.
  • In the daytime, a large number of 4G devices erodes the telcos network capacity and adversely affects everyone’s mobile network experience.

With an increasing number of users moving to 4G LTE devices, accelerated by cheaper 4G smartphone devices, and rising average data consumption per user, Indian telecom operators can expect data traffic to continue to soar. Thus the challenge of network congestion would persist.
