In an attempt to control the Marketing SMS from reaching normal numbers which is not registered in National Do Not Disturb Service, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) beginning from today ( 27-09-2011 ), started implementing the 100 sms per day per sim restriction ( this new restriction was already reported by us ).

According to TRAI directive published here, there are some  exception to the ruling, like the messages send to special numbers ( having higher rates for sms ) like for voting on reality shows,contest, in FM radio’s. Other exception includes

  • Dealers of the Telecom Service Providers and DTH Operators for sending request for electronic recharge on mobile numbers.
  • e-ticketing agencies for responding to e-ticketing request made by its customers.
  • The social networking sites – Facebook, Twitter, Orkut, LinkedIn and GooglePlus to its members pertaining to activities relating to their accounts based on their verifiable options;
  • Agencies providing directory services – Justdial, Zatse, Callezee, Getit and Askme.

The directive by TRAI also restricts service provider from promoting any special tariff packs assuring the user of more than 100 SMS’s per day, unless it’s a telemarketer who has registered himself.  Check the below SMS we received from one of the telecom operator saying about the restriction by TRAI.

Recently, TRAI has disconnected over 72,000 telephone connections of registered telemarketers and more than 118,000 of the unregistered telemarketing companies for violating the guidelines related to calls and messages upto May 2011.

Will the new restriction from TRAI will control the telemarketers or else its just another restriction to 800 million mobile subscribers freedom? Share your comments below and also participate in our poll here.
